Accenture Gave Close To Million Pesos; Awesome Apps That Will Change Philippines

Accenture “Program the Future” Competition Recognizes Top Technology Apps Developed by Students

Winning apps promote environment protection & public health

Accenture in the Philippines recently concluded a competition, titled “Program the Future: The Accenture Technology Campus Challenge 2015,” that yielded innovative apps developed by high performing college students to help address environmental and public health and safety issues.

Of the nearly 80 entries received from colleges and universities across the Philippines, the top 10 overall teams were chosen — five teams each for the Games App Challenge and App of the Future Challenge categories.

The champion teams of each category won Php 200,000 and Php 250,000 worth of prizes respectively and an additional Php 50,000 for their respective schools. Meanwhile, the runner-up team for the Games App Challenge was awarded Php 100,000 worth of prizes and the runner-up for the App of the Future Challenge received Php150,000 worth of prizes.

Earth-saving mobile game app

Team Technosaur from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) emerged as the champion in the Games App Challenge for developing “Modern Sweeper,” a 5-in-1 mobile game that challenges players to protect and save the earth. Team members Princess Sicat, Fenela Bagalayos, Marco Francisco, and Paulo Santiago created a game that shows real-life problems that revolve around recycling, waste management, pollution, and dynamite fishing.

Games App Challenge runner-up Team EChO from the Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) University highlighted the significance of teaching water conservation to children (ages five to nine) thru their “Water Warrior” mobile game. Team EChO is comprised of Chum Keji Ocan, Jobelle Gerasta, Mark Joseph Fernandez and Junjie Sumalinog.

Team GwaPro and Team Creativs, both from the University of the Philippines Cebu, along with Team Earth Rangers from the University of San Jose Recoletos, completed this year’s finalists in the Games App Challenge category.

Save power with the futuristic home automation app

Team UCL from the University of the Philippines took the top prize in the App of the Future Challenge with a home automation assistant app called “Irina.” According to Romelio Tavas, Jr., Jasper Mendoza, Jake Sabandal, and Randy Beros, their team was inspired by the Internet of Things. “Irina” enables users to command appliances to turn off on their own, present electric consumption in peso value, identify which appliance consumes the most electricity, and help determine electricity consumption trends on a monthly basis.

Team Spectrum’s Charlie Ahl Arreglo, Princess Lykken Abella, Antonio Sotto, Jr., and Joyce Marie Montegrande, also from CIT University, received the runner-up trophy. They developed “Golden Garbage, a waste segregation Android app that helps users locate nearby junk shops and provides information on the recyclable items accepted and their corresponding costs.

De La Salle’s Team CoDiverse, University of the Philippines Diliman’s The In-code-ables and AMA Computer Learning Center, College of Meycauayan’s Team MAX were also part of the top 5 teams in the App of the Future Challenge category.

Skills development of IT students

Now on its second year, Program the Future seeks to encourage talented youth to use technology to create a greater future for Filipinos and the country. The competition is a testament to Accenture’s continued commitment to enhance the skills of today’s Information Technology (IT) students.

Ambe Tierro, Technology Lead of Accenture in the Philippines and chairman of the panel of judges, commended all the students for creating very impressive apps that exceeded the judges’ expectations.

“The apps that you developed, in addition to the teamwork, collaboration and passion you showed, are proof that our country’s future is in good hands. May you continue to realize that you can use your talents and skills to make a difference,” said Tierro.

In addition to Tierro, the finalists were evaluated by Prof. John Williams of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), ABS-CBN’s Chief Digital Officer Donald Patrick Lim, and some of Accenture’s top executives, including Country Managing Director Lito Tayag, Digital Lead JP Palpallatoc, Platform Lead Chucky Castro, and Delivery Director for the Avanade unit Stephen Alba.

Helping OFWs Bridge Financial Gaps

After years of uphill struggle, many OFWs come home to stay into the same financial status and way of life they had before they departed the country. There are many whys and wherefores for such an upshot – their families back home were unable to save, the salary earned out of the country proved inadequate for the family’s mounting necessities, the OFW overseas had so many other trials to deal with such that economic groundwork fall through the cracks, or financial implements abroad simply did not tone with the needs of our fellowmen in other countries.

With AXA iON, Filipinos abroad who log on to the internet quite often can now access the most basic financial products that can help them secure their financial future in a transparent, easy, and affordable way.

“The internet is playing an ever increasing role in the way we communicate, transact and find information about anything,” Rien Hermans, President & CEO of AXA Philippines said,
“With AXA iON, we now give Filipinos the chance to secure their financial future from the increasing costs of education, the burden of expensive healthcare costs, and the passing of a breadwinner, all in a digital platform, in just a few, easy steps, and from wherever they are,” he added.

AXA iON offers four (4) fully-guaranteed products that make up the AXA eXentials line, which are designed to be affordable with premiums starting at only P1,000 per month:

  • Savings eXentials is a fail-proof alternative to savings that provide better returns than a regular savings account returns, pays out the cash to your family even if you don’t complete the 5-year savings plan in case of death or disability.
  • Academic eXentials gives guaranteed cash benefits once a year for 5 consecutive years, to help defray costs related to tuition or education. But in case of untimely demise before the 5-year payout period, Academic eXentials will give your family additional cash every year until the year before the scheduled release of benefits.
  • Life eXentials is a back-to-basics income replacement plan. Unlike typical life insurance plans, Life eXentials pays out its benefits monthly over a period of up to 5 years so there’s no danger of wiping out the insurance proceeds at once and ensures that the beneficiaries get a monthly stipend to replace the income of the loved one who passed away.
  • Health eXentials is the affordable complement to HMO coverage as it pays out cash upon diagnosis of critical conditions such as heart attack, stroke, including gender specific cancers (breast, cervical, prostate cancers), stroke, heart attack, Alzheimer’s disease, liver disease and 30 other critical illnesses.

The Gift Filipinos Deserve This Season

Criticized about how commercialized it has become, gift giving has kept economies bustling every December as families honor each other's relationships with tangible offerings and there is nothing bad about making the people we love happy.

For busy working professionals, shopping has become a dreadful chore that is why online shopping sites have sprouted up guaranteeing convenience to the flustered Filipino consumer. These may teach us delayed gratification as packages arrive two to three days later, but you can never put a price on time you've saved that you can use to attend to the more important things in life like family and career than wasting time driving through traffic, being bombarded with confusing choices and long lists, going head to head with other aggressive shoppers, lining up to the counter and don't even get me started about having these wrapped.

Top-tier e-commerce websites like Zalora.com.ph, Lazada.com.ph, FoxySales.com, Wego.com.ph, Bebe.com catering to different wide range of markets and needs ranging from apparel to houseware, from travel to consumer electronics. But what could be a greater way to enjoy the luxury of time and choice when you use these respected mainstream shopping services than to get super neat deals and discounts.

For me, the joy of waiting for the courier to ring your doorbell is the best part after hitting the checkout button and the unboxing is the climax if all this is an adventure tale. I'd like to share the joy by announcing the arrival of a startup that gives Filipinos like you and me a way to save on online purchases to the sites abovementioned.

Head on to http://iprice.ph and use the discounts to get you and your loved ones the next lifestyle upgrade happiness especially this season of generosity and love.

How This Big Brand Gets You to Be #BetterTogether

With the recent launch of the #BetterTogether campaign, McDonald’s and Coca-Cola took a stand and asked people to stay offline a little longer to celebrate real-world connections.

Encouraging its customers to spend time with one another over a McDonald’s meal and a Coca-Cola drink, the two iconic brands introduced the BFF Bundles, meals best shared with friends, enabling them to experience moments of genuine connection anytime, anywhere.

In order to amplify and sustain the #BetterTogether campaign’s big idea of inspiring people to enrich their friendships by being physically together, McDonald’s and Coca-Cola have developed a new mobile app that will make bonding time even more exciting—the BFF Timeout App.

A fun new way to bring friends closer together, the BFF Timeout App is a gaming app which challenges players to go on a “digital timeout” with friends—to celebrate real-world connections without digital interruptions, such as checking their mobile phones. Customers just have to download the app from the App Store or Google Play Store on their iOS or Android phones, log in with their Facebook accounts or play as a guest, invite friends to play, and spend minutes, or even hours, gadget-free.

The game is very simple yet offers a fun challenge to those who find themselves often glued to their smartphones and handheld gadgets, as one can earn badges for more minutes played. The longer you and your friends go on a timeout, the better the reward!

More than being able to play a game with the gang, friends also have the chance to take their timeout to a fun destination! Until July 19, 2014, every purchase of a BFF Burger or Chicken Bundle for three or four comes with a coupon. Each coupon contains a code, which must be entered in the app to qualify for a chance to win a free trip for four! Prizes include a trip to Boracay on the first raffle draw, Coron, Palawan on the second, Singapore on the third and Osaka, Japan on the final draw.

So how long do you think you and your friends can last on a digital timeout? Download the McDonald’s and Coca-Cola BFF Timeout App now and find out!

This is how social media should be designed for, to upgrade the quality of life and experiences and not distract us!

Visit www.bfftimeout.com to know more. Tell us how you’re celebrating real-world connections by using the hashtags #BetterTogether and #BFFTimeout.

#JayseeBlabs Closer Look on Developing an App for your Brand

There is so much value into creating apps that market your brand in a way that will give consumers a fresh new way to interact with your portfolio at the same having a lifestyle problem solved at the same time. It's all about creating a much bigger enterprise impact.

Your proposition to give a better experience or make their lives easier should be exceeded each and every time as time and resource to download your app has its cost to the end-user. Marketing the brand should come second and make usability and purpose as first.

Multi-national brands should consider placing deep investment in app development to platforms where their consumers spend time on. Customer engagement has long changed and is set to replace the traditional marketing in the next few years or so because of its scalability, reach, cost-effectiveness and "measurability."

How to do Kickass Rebranding and Awesome Social Media Strategy

Social Media Primer

What is social media?

Social Media is defined as a conversation powered by online platforms. Conversations between all people in the internet.

There is no regulation and no formal organization so an expert consultation is needed to aid entities who wish to utilize this form of media. Content that you share has to be emergent, fun, compelling but the key thing is to listen to your target audience.

The ability of your target audience to respond in real-time makes goals quantifiable as well as measurable qualitatively. It is a brand new way of understanding markets not just another messaging channel.

What are the things you can do with social media?

  1. Post real-time updates and advisories
  2. Complement your traditional media campaigns by making the materials available online
  3. Archive and distribute important government documents meant for public distribution
  4. Promote events
  5. Raise awareness
  6. Crowd source materials, ideas, feedback, suggestion
  7. Recruit volunteers
  8. Raise funds

What are its limitations?

It is not a magic bullet, it will not help you if you don’t develop your brand, and if you don’t have a staff. As with any other medium, it takes time: to listen, to participate, to generate buzz and build a community. The biggest struggle non-profits and government have is understanding the platforms as tools to engage communities, that is what new media companies are built for.

Why is it important?

Internet usage is growing at an exponential rate. This year, Asia Pacific is expected to triple theirs with wifi-enabled mobile computing devices becoming commodities. Corporations, governments and NGOs are capitalizing on their social media profiles to engage.

Philippines has a fair chance to achieving the same brand success given the right tools, planning, and implementation. GlobalWebIndex published a study about social networking usage for 2011-212 and we, Filipinos, ranks first; all the more reasons to tap the medium. Industry insiders attribute it to our culture of kinship among family and friends.

Publicity.com reports that it took radio and TV to reach 50 million users. Facebook added 100 million users in 6 months. Amazing isn’t it?

No wonder why department and agencies of developing countries’ governments are on Facebook: Department of Health Victoria AU and Department of Health and Health Services of the US.

Awesome Cebu Startup: Citom partners with taxi-hailing app Micab

HAILING a taxi during the Christmas season has been a perennial problem in Metro Cebu.

To help the commuting public get easy access to a taxi ride this coming holiday season, the City Traffic Operations Management (CITOM) has decided partner with the mobile cab-hailing services of Micab.

The CITOM, to ensure the effective realization of its goal, will be handing out smartphones to taxicabs on Friday, supplementing the initial units that Micab has deployed for this pilot project.

Micab targets close to 1000 units deployed by end of the year in Cebu only. The project will expand fast to Davao, Iloilo, and Manila based on a franchise model to penetrate the market fast.

Micab aims 80-90 percent penetration of the taxi hailing service in the Philippines in the next couple of months.

The taxi-hailing smartphone app was launched in Cebu recently to assist the commuters in getting a cab hassle-free anytime and anywhere around the metropolitan area.

The Cebuano riding public will never have to wait in queues on taxi stands or even have to outsmart and outrun each other on the streets as they can simply use the Micab app by just tapping on their mobile phones to hail a cab to their location.

The app is just easy to use. People only need to download the app, key in some basic personal information and their self-description for recognition purposes.

With MiCab, a user can request for a taxi by just tapping on the app, which will then send a signal to available smartphone-equipped cabs within a 2-kilometer radius.
Taxi drivers equipped with smartphones are paying P30 a day for the mobile gadgets and data load credits.
For using the app, the passenger will only pay a minimal P5.00 charge on top of the taxi fare.

The Micab app was developed by the talented trio of Kenneth Baylosis, Keith Levi Lumanog, and Eddie Ybanez, who acquired the full backing of award-winning ICT company, Next IX, for their startup venture.

Seeing the potential in the Micab startup, Next IX chief executive officer and founder Bobby Suson has offered to support Baylosis, Lumanog, and Ybanez.

The MiCab app is only available for Android devices at the moment, but the three young developers said it will be available for iOS and Windows devices before the year ends.

This was learned from Tina Amper, founder and president of the organizing TechTalks.ph who said that DOST, through its Information and Communications Technology Office (DOST-ICTO), has since been very supportive of the group’s activities.

“The DOST has always been there for us,” said Amper. “From the first Startup Weekend Cebu to Startup Weekend Cebu 3, the DOST has been a perennial supporter. We owe all of this to Usec Casambre and sir Monchito (Ibrahim).”

Undersecretary Louis Napoleon C. Casambre is the executive director of DOST-ICTO, whose leadership has moved the agency forward in its new thrust to uplift the entrepreneurial spirit in the ICT industry. Monchito Ibrahim is Casambre’s deputy executive director for policies.

“We in the ICTO believe that providing support to technological and entrepreneurial activities like the Startup Weekend and `Geeks On A Beach’ is an effective way to further promote the ICT industry where Filipinos excel,” Casambre said.

Promotion of homegrown ICT products and businesses will not only provide employment in the locality, according to Casambre, but also innovative and creative solutions through products and services.

“We never tire in organizing and supporting events where young entrepreneurial-minded Filipinos will learn the rudiments of starting and managing a business through online media and the emergence of highly-sophisticated mobile devices,” Casambre said.

Attending the GOAB will be like going on a holiday as the conference will be held against the splendid natural backdrop that earned for Boracay the distinction as the “world’s best island” by Travel+Leisure.

The GOAB techfest promises to be a valuable and wonderful experience for participants as experts from across the globe will be on hand to share their insights on startups, technology, gaming, mobile apps, and graphic design with the songs of Bob Marley and real Jamaican reggae music in the background.

Doy Vea, chief wireless adviser and founder of Smart Communications (SMART), will be the keynote speaker in the opening of the GOAB Conference.

Topics lined up for discussion are The World Startup Ecosystem: Distinguishing the Asian Experience, The Evolution of Philippine Startup Ecosystem, Fostering and Funding Asian Startups, Startup Best Practices and Philippine Startup Success Stories, Social Media for World Change, World Startup Report: Opportunities and Threats, Strategies of Successful Startups, Attracting Investors, and Investing in Emerging Markets.

The growing list of resource speakers for the event include Bowei Gai of World Startup Report, Jojo Flores of Plug and Play Tech Center, Ron Hose of Innovation Endeavors, Maria Ressa of Rappler.com, Zac Cohn of Liffft, Ralph Wunsch of MetroDeal, Paul Singh of 500 Startups, Stephen Jagger of PayrollHero, Frederic Levy of CashCashPinoy, Earl Valencia of IdeaSpace.ph, Minette Navarette of Kickstart Ventures, Erick Garayblas of Kuyi Mobile, Jia Jih Chai of Airbnb, M. Christina Laskowski of STAC-Silicon Valley, Eric Su of PicLyf, Jay Fajardo of Proudcloud, Steve Cadigan of Cadigan Ventures, and Paco Sandejas of Narra Venture Capital, among many others.

It will also be a great opportunity for startup communities to pitch innovative ideas and create a network of partners, enroute to building new products and launching businesses that would attract investors to the Philippines.

The “Geeks on a Beach” event also features fun-filled geek games, film showing, and exhibitions for participants to enjoy.

Technological background or mastery is not a requirement for admission. One can simply attend “Geeks on a Beach” armed with interest and wicked ideas.

Interested to attend the GOAB may register at the event’s official website at http://www.geeksonabeach.com/ and enjoy 50 percent discount off the registration fee which is being offered until July 20 only. The first 20 early registrants will get the chance to have a group lunch with the speakers.

Earn Free $25 By Helping Others

A revolutionary micro-financing website launched a few years ago. Now with over millions of dollars lent, with a guaranteed 98.99% repayment rate from borrowers, the success of the US-based company lies on how efficient it is in mobilizing crowd-sourced funds to those who need it most, our struggling brothers and sisters all over the world.

I am proud to introducing Kiva. Empowering people and alleviating poverty $25 at a time.
Choose a borrower. Make a loan. Get repaid. Repeat!

I had a first hand experience on how it was able to change the lives of its loan clients here in the Philippines when I was flown to Kabankalan City, Negros Oriental and meet the people behind the success of the social enterprise.

Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation Inc. (NWTF), increases its aid to the homemakers by seeking the partnership of Kiva to some of its members. These women are trying to increase family income through setting up businesses in farming, raising hogs, feeding fowls, setting up stalls and selling different kinds of delicacies and on top that, building better homes, all the while exuding grace and joy as I have observed in their monthly meeting at their center; a genuine portrait of Pinoy optimism.

Why Kiva?

  1. It is really simple to use and is free. You can just instantly register using Facebook connect.
  2. Just by signing up, you earn free $25 that you can loan to any micro-entrepreneur in the Philippines.

When you loan someone on Kiva, you are loaning them the chance at a better life, create opportunities and there is nothing better than to be able to change a family's life at your convenience. This is a great opportunity for busy professionals to help out without having to exert so much time, effort or resources.

Step 1.

Get started today with a one-click sign up process using your Facebook Profile.

Step 2.

After signing up, you'll get a free $25 where you are given the option to choose who to loan to but I suggest you pick from the women supported by NWTF, read about their stories and how your loan can help them.

Why care?

The whole thing will only take three minutes of your time and if you think that whatever it is you are trying to do online is more important than saving a family today, I respect that, but I will have this on your conscience. It's time to actually care and sending help as convenient as this means lending out love with little to no effort at your part which leaves you with no excuse to defend your apathy. Invest today and see your portfolio grow too.

If you want to learn more about the amazing things about NWTF read about my awesome trip all the way to their headquarters as I get to meet the inspiring women whose lives were forever altered for the best, thanks to the Philippines fastest-growing and most respected NGO today.

ASUS Secret to Perfectly Engineered PCs and Tablets is YOU

What started as a motherboard manufacturer now becomes a top lifestyle brand with a line up of electronic devices that makes personal and work life so much easier and fun!

ASUS, the leading global brand in PCs and mobile among others, got its name from Pegasus of Greek mythology. And just like the winged horse, it has soared to become one of the pioneers in the industry today.

I am living testament to the power of their products as I am one of the proud owners of ASUS Google Nexus 7 and to tell you that it is worth all the hassles buying it from Adorama.com (all the way from the US when it first got out of the market), is an understatement. It has hypothetically never left my side except in the shower and it has aided me in my book reading, collaboration with my orgs, social networking and power surfing. Did I mention that NVidia Tegra has made my gaming experience top notch? So much to love about such a great product but it is another blog post to tell though.

Celebrating a great year for the company here in the Philippines, they flew their top dealers all over the country all the way here in sunny island of Cebu for a few days of nothing but beach fun and festivities.

Jervie of jerminix.com, Ram of techbuzz.ph and your truly,
Jaysee of www.jaysee.me pose with the  ASUS Padfone
which is not going to be available anytime soon in the country.
Yes, you are not delusional,
that's a connectable tablet and a smartphone in one!

We also got a close encounter to their latest line up of all-in-one PCs, mobile tablets, notebooks and ultrabooks and we could never be more delighted to know that such light devices contain SO much power that it should've been a fat PC in a parallel world.

What is notable on their products is the fact that is centered around user experience. From the unboxing up to its incorporation to your day to day living, they have thought of your needs and wants way ahead. In fact they have devised principles known as Customer Happiness 1.0 and 2.0 which discusses about the specifications of their devices in terms of fulfilling needs and meeting standards.

Even the sound when the turn your device on has been studied, where every corner and space counts, they have perfectly engineered every model to a particular market segment and it gives me chills to see how this was accounted for, in their series of presentation.

Their hardworking and brilliant people working behind the scenes propelled ASUS where it is today, positioned to be a brand to reckon with. Smart. Experience. Life. One thing I've learned that day, they don't sell gadgets. They sell the experience; a marketing buzzword that goes beyond what the numbers of their specifications and performance actually mean to real normal people like you and me.

A beautiful stolen shot care of my sizzie Chanel Imperial of shankybaby.blogspot.com

As it turns out, they are more geared towards the future.

ASUS wants you to live a life that is simple, easy and social.

They have introduced products that seamlessly connect with each other even with other branded Android devices. They want your data, your life per se, to be ubiquitous. Thus, they introduced cloud storage so you can access your photos, documents, videos and other files on the go. Plus they made it to a point to tailor fit the features to make your content easier to share to family, friends and to the world. They want you to live easy that is why their mobile devices has reached the top benchmarks in terms of responsiveness and they were never afraid to name the competitors included in their testing and I'm not here to burden you with technical results as their site could do that for you for validation purposes.

In their commitment to give you nothing but the best money could buy, ASUS and their line up of life savers are here to usher us to a new age of living life that way we should be.

Movenpick Resort Hotel Cebu hosts the ASUS team and guests

How to recharge prepaid mobile balance from anywhere in the world

I have relatives on both sides of my family living abroad for various reasons reasons and it always has something to do with trying to give the very best for their families. Technology has enabled us to connect with our loved ones in ways we never knew a few decades back. It has enabled us to simply talk and laugh with them like they were never gone. In fact, last Christmas, the whole family gathered around the computer to skype with our cousins abroad and they did a little magic show to our little children's amazement. Things like this are priceless.

But Skype has limitations, they're gonna need to login to their computer to be able to contact you. They even need to load credits to call you, or when worse comes to worst: what if there is an emergency and you need to get contacted immediately. Computer and internet connection may not always be there but your phone is. Worry not, there is hope.

I had just learned about how to enrich your experience with loved ones abroad through an innovation. Swissclear Global is a service provider for international mobile recharge, content and gaming credits. They have passion in connecting and entertaining families worldwide. It is a Singapore-registered company established in 2008 with a passion to connect humanity.

See video to know more about Mobile Airtime Recharge and how you and the people who matter to you would be more connected than ever, regardless of what country they may be in.
