Spain is Coming to Invade Philippines Again #awesomeph

Alyssa Tricia Eloise Vintola and Lorenz Ray Payonaga won with their entry project entitled ‘Oscillohump’, an awesome energy management solution that harvests energy from road humps using the concept of induction. To explain it further, it simply means that whenever a vehicle passes through the Oscillohump, they generate power that charges a battery which may be used to power street lamps, traffic lights, or CCTV cameras. They even had the chance to get an all-expense paid visit to Paris, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Denmark and Indonesia.

The Shell FuelSave Good Choice Report poked into the lives of commercial drivers, private individuals, moms and college students who drive at least once week, from different key cities such as Metro Manila, Dagupan City, Batangas City, Metro Cebu and Davao City. It is indeed revitalizing to note that our fretfulness even in deciding where to eat, what to do, where to go, to milestone decisions such as career and financial planning takes up a huge chunk of our lives.

“We recognize that our customers are very busy people and are pre-occupied with so many things,” says Mr Anthony Yam, VP Pilipinas Shell. 

While most Filipino motorists make decisions based on own personal prejudices and considers themselves as strongest influencers in their decision-making, there are a lot of things being put into regard. Funds, family and life partners are naturally being consulted as well.

The study also emphasizes that these decisions are done in the morning, while out of home and most of the time, on the road. These are things we all know already, can all relate to and it is saddening that it had to take a corporate study to make us aware of our habits.

And just a great way to highlight how making good choices impact our lives positively, Shell organized a Driving Challenge event. Putting together celebrity Bianca Gonzales and 13 everyday drivers test road savvy and fuel efficiency skills as they drive from Bonifacio Global City to Batangas and back. To those who are not aware of how long a drive that is, it is about 240 kilomoters. That’s around five audiobooks, 10 US Top 40 albums, singing your next favourite song on Spotify, ranting about that annoying girl at work or taking a pic of the cars in front you for Waze points and the list goes on.






Shell Fuel Scientist Mae Ascan, the only Filipino Fuel Scientist in the world, gave a special mentoring session to the participants on smarter driving behaviors. Ultimately, through this Challenge, choosing the right fuel does not have to be a tough decision, states Mr Yam. And yes, there’s a hundred years of street cred of the conglomerate to prove that.

Road to Finals: Elite runners win 38th National @MiloPH Marathon

Elite runners Rene Herrera and Lany Cardona set a swift pace for the 21-K division run at the 38th National MILO Marathon on Sunday in Dagupan City. Each received a cash prize of P10,000, a trophy, and a coveted spot in the National Finals on December 7 for their respective victories.

Out of more than 10,000 runners, 48 qualified for the National Finals in this leg. As an added incentive to the prestige of winning the country’s premier footrace, MILO will be sending this season’s MILO Marathon King and Queen to compete with the world’s finest athletes at the Tokyo Marathon in 2015.

35-year-old Herrera led the pack, clocking in a time of 01:12:36. Robino Javier followed close behind, finishing at 01:15:59, and Ronnie Rosete placed third 01:19:37. Herrera, who hails from Guimaras, is a member of the Philippine Navy and a five time SEA Games gold medalist. He also competed in the 2012 London Olympics.

“I have joined the MILO marathon since 1995, and this year, the race is part of my training for my qualification in the Philippine Team for the 2014 Asian Games in South Korea,” expressed Herrera. “Qualifying for the National Finals is an added boost for me and it will certainly help me in my hopes to be part of the national team.”

Herrera has been training in Baguio, the Philippine Team’s base in preparation for the Asian Games in September. His training regime consists of morning and afternoon sessions with extensive runs in the city’s Marcos Highway. Coach Jim Saret, creator of the MILO R2-APEX Running School, has also invited Herrera to be his assistant coach for beginner runners in the Baguio roadshow of the running school in June this year.

In the distaff side, Lany Cardona took advantage of the good weather and placed first, posting a time of 01:30:20. Rivals Cinderella Lorenzo (01:33:27) and Cristina Melchor (01:50:58) placed second and third, respectively. The 23-year-old housewife from Bolinao, Pangasinan is the record holder for winning the most number of gold medals in the PATAFA National Open.

“We are lucky it is sunny today, which is great for running. It has been raining the past days when I’ve been training,” said Cardona.

“For the qualifying race, I prepared by running four times a week. I also joined several races. I will continue my training and I hope to be at my best for the National Finals.”

With the support of the Department of Education and the National MILO Marathon runners, MILO’s Help Gives Shoes advocacy will provide 16,000 underprivileged youth with brand new running shoes and reach the 50,000 mark this year. As MILO celebrates its 50th year, Help Give Shoes aims to make the donation to students in Yolanda-hit cities, particularly Tacloban, Ormoc, and Eastern Samar.

“MILO’s Help Give Shoes is wonderful program which reaches out to underprivileged children who aspire to run and become future champions. I used to be one of those kids, and the advocacy continues to inspire me,” said Herrera. Cardona echoes the same sentiments.

“What MILO does for the children is admirable, and I’m more than willing to contribute and help our aspiring athletes. We all share the same passion for running, and it’s great that the kids will be able to pursue their dreams,” she added.

The qualifying race will resume in Tarlac on July 13 before heading to

  4. Lucena (August 31), 
  5. Puerto Princesa (September 7),

Cebu #Startup Weekend 2014 Champions Aspiring Entrepreneurs @swcebu @CebuBizMonth

Everyone who are willing to build up businesses, aspiring marketers and passionate entrepreneurs whether with technical or non-technical background, from students to professionals to retired persons who have a passion to build a business or desire to learn how, or anyone who are established business persons looking for technology partners are encouraged to be part of the community of startup enthusiasts, who gather together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch start-ups.

The University of Cebu (UC) – Banilad Campus will play host to the fourth leg of Startup Weekend Cebu (SWC) slated on June 6, 7 and 8, 2014 at 6:30PM to 10:00PM.
 
The 54-hour event starts with an “open mic” pitching of business ideas on Friday night, wherein attendees are urged to bring out their ideas and inspire others who are present to join or make their team.

Each team should focus on:

  1. customer development, 
  2. validating their ideas, 
  3. practicing LEAN Startup Methodologies and 
  4. building a minimal viable product over Saturday and Sunday. 
Afterwards, on Sunday evening, teams turn their ideas into prototypes, and demo it for presentation to receive valuable feedback from a panel of experts.

Last year’s SWC3 winners included 1st place winner Edroll, 2nd place winner BloodMatch and 3rd place winner At Your Service Bai.

Organizers of Cebu Startup Weekend anticipate a more productive and exciting field for the participants joining the three-day event. Organized by high-profiled volunteers from TechTalks.ph, a SEC-registered non-profit of business, which provides opportunities for training and connection with the right resources to help the Philippine grassroots community become more globally competitive.

“Technology fires up businesses.  Technology makes businesses grow faster globally.  This strengthens our position as we approach ASEAN Integration.  We are excited with our partnership with Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) for Cebu Business Month,” said TechTalks.ph founder Tina Amper.

She is also a global organizer of World Startup Report, a social project to connect and document startup communities worldwide. CCCI Awesome Schedule of Activities Cebu #Business Month 2014 @CebuBizMonth

Organizers of Cebu Business Month 2014 has set the Grand Opening Salvo of this year’s Cebu Business Month this Friday, May 30, 2014 at 4:00PM at The Terraces in Ayala Center Cebu.

Cebu Business Month features a month-long series of events geared towards inspiring more successes in the Cebu Business Community. CBM is organized and held annually by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI).

In the opening festivity, highlights of the CBM 2014 activities will then be introduced together with the official declaration of CBM 2014’s grand opening.  After which, a fantastic fireworks display will be held followed by a concert by the Zee Band and Rave Party.

CBM 2014 carries the theme “ASEAN 2015 and Beyond” and offers “Big and Bold” highlighted activities that will spark to the growth of Cebu’s businesses towards global competitiveness.  These activities focus on CCCI’s major thrusts, which include ICT & Business Process Management (BPM), Tourism and Investment Promotion, Entrepreneurship and Creative Industries and Advocacy.


  • CBM 2014 activities will start on June 2-3 for Cebu ICT and BPM Conference and Expo at 8:00AM to 5:00PM at Marco Polo Plaza Hotel; 
  • Start-up Weekend on June 6-8 at 6:30PM to 10:00PM at University of Cebu-Banilad Campus; 
  • An Entrepreneurship Seminar about Building a National Brand and Going Nationwide on June 10 at 9:00AM to 5:00PM at Cebu City Marriott Hotel; 
  • June 12 to 14 for Franchising Negosyo Para sa Cebu, which will be organized by the Philippine Franchise Association, at 10:00AM to 9:00PM at Ayala Center Cebu.



  • The 2nd Cebu-In-The-Bag: Island Madness Sale will be on June 13 to 15 at SM City Cebu; 
  • Second Entrepreneurship Seminar about Competing in the Global Space on June 17 at 9:00AM to 5:00PM at Harolds Hotel;

A Great New Way to Support Countryside Entrepreneurial Activities @swcebu @swbohol @dost_pagasa


THE Information and Communications Technology Office of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-ICT Office), is again supporting Startup Weekend Cebu (SWC) which will be on its fourth staging come June 6-8 at the University of Cebu (UC) Banilad campus.

Startup Weekend Cebu 4, organized by TechTalks.ph and DOST-ICT Office and supported by Cebu Educational Development Foundation for IT (CEDF-IT), is aimed at generating breakthrough ideas from tech communities in the Visayas region.

Startup Weekend is a 54-hour competition where developers, designers, marketers, technopreneurs, and venture capitalists come together to share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch startup businesses.

The concept, which started in the U.S., is a global movement to empower young entrepreneurs to nurture their innovative ideas into becoming sustainable businesses.

The event gathers experts and practitioners from different fields of business to mentor the participants as they launch their concepts into business reality.

The whole event involves the participants in different stages of the business cycle including idea creation and business pitching, prototype development, mentorship and networking sessions until product or business presentation to possible investors and funders.

According to DOST Undersecretary and ICT Office executive director Louis Napoleon C. Casambre, the ICT Office has been moving forward in its new thrust to uplift the entrepreneurial spirit in the ICT industry, and in line with this, it is supporting Startup Weekend Cebu 4.

“The DOST - ICT Office believes that providing support in countryside entrepreneurial activities is an effective way in livening and expanding the local economy through ICT,” Ibrahim said. “Promotion of homegrown ICT products and businesses will not only provide employment in the countryside but also help develop innovative and creative solutions that can address not only the local but also the global market.”

Tina Amper, founder of TechTalks.ph, said the DOST - ICT Office has since been very supportive of their activities, which now includes a Startup Weekend in Bohol later this year.
“From the first Startup Weekend Cebu to `Geeks on a Beach’, the DOST - ICT Office has been a consistent backer,” Amper said. “They have always been there for us, and we are very grateful to them, specially to Usec. Casambre and ICT Office deputy executive director Mon Ibrahim.”

Amper is serving as adviser/mentor to a new set of volunteer organizers who have stepped up to lead this year’s Startup Weekend. Entrepreneurs Rica Serenio and Ben Skelton will be leading SWCebu and SWBohol, respectively.

During Startup Weekend, participants get acquainted with one another starting on a Friday night. They pitch startup concepts they are passionate about, and form teams around the most popular ideas. They refine their ideas and business plans and start building product prototypes with the help of the onsite mentors, and then present what they have accomplished in a four-minute pitch and demo by Sundayevening.

Following the success of its inaugural staging in May 2012, Startup Weekend Cebu organizers successfully staged its second and third and now decided to hold its fourth leg in June due to the incessant demand of startup enthusiasts in the Visayas and Mindanao area again in partnership with DOST-ICT Office.

With the support of DOST - ICT Office, Amper said the 4th edition of Startup Weekend Cebu in June is again expected to be a resounding success, as well as the first Startup Weekend Bohol in Tagbilaran.

The DOST – ICT Office and TechTalks.ph are likewise co-organizing Startup Weekend Bohol which, according to Amper, has already drawn the backing of Bohol Gov. Edgar M. Chatto.

Everybody interested in learning how to start a business using web or mobile technologies are invited to participate in Startup Weekend Cebu 4. Technical mastery is not required.

Students, business people, and tech enthusiasts are encouraged to attend. Software developers and designers are likewise welcome to the event.

Why Amazon Top Tech Honcho Speaks at KickstartPH

Amazon.com Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Dr. Werner Vogels is set to speak before local tech startup companies to help them determine the best low cost and easy-to-use infrastructure necessary to scale and grow their businesses.

Vogels is the special guest at the Kickstart Ventures, Inc.’s Startup Mixer, a ​regular ​community event ​that stimulates interaction and collaboration ​​among startup founders, mentors, and investors, to be held at The Globe Tower in Bonifacio Global City on April 30.

These services power a wide variety of workloads including web and mobile applications, data processing and warehousing, storage, archive, among others.

All 17 startups under Kickstart’s portfolio currently enjoys USD2,500 worth of free credits from AWS which they can use in whatever way they want.  Better performing startups also get an additional USD5,000 worth of credits.

Aside from AWS, Vogels will also discuss the 2014 trends coming out of Silicon Valley and how startups can learn and gain from them.

Prior to joining Amazon, Vogels worked as a researcher at Cornell University where he was a principal investigator in several research projects that target the scalability and robustness of mission-critical enterprise computing systems. He has held positions of VP of Technology and CTO in companies that handled the transition of academic technology into industry.

What The UK Ambassador Did That Delighted Filipino Guests

British Ambassador to the Philippines Asif Ahmad greeted guests in eloquent Filipino which came as a pleasant surprise in an intimate event with British diplomats and Cebu society.

He shares the hardships they had to go through when the most unfortunate thing happened to our country. "As we had no military operational links with the Philippines, I had to ensure that our deployment of two navy ships, three [Royal Air Force] cargo planes and 1,200 military personnel were able to operate effectively."

Overcoming a huge dilemma in transporting care to those who need it most, it has never been highly publicized that United Kingdom is the number one contributor in the wake of supertyphoon Haiyan/Yolanda’s wreckage in the Visayas, surpassing the US, humility that is of record level, a testament to their genuine care for us as a nation. 

He also shares his vision of attracting more stakeholders to come and invest in the country thus creating more jobs and opportunities and his track record would speak for itself.

He now looks forward to a brighter future for Philippines as with the rest of us.


He has chosen a long time Cebu resident who served a key role in organizing British aid as UK new honorary consul in Cebu. Ms Tamsin Booth has been assigned to care for British citizens in the Visayas and she speaks our local vernacular (Bisaya) as beautifully as she looks.

Hooray for Today! @McDo_PH Celebrates 2nd National Breakfast Day with 1000 #freemcmuffin

After the success of the first National Breakfast Day last year, McDonald’s Philippines, together with thousands of other McDonald’s restaurants in Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa, will be celebrating the second National Breakfast Day.

On March 17, McDonald’s will once again be treating Filipinos to a free McMuffin. Close to 320 McDonald’s breakfast stores nationwide are joining the celebration to say ‘thank you’ to its customers who start their day at McDonald’s. 




Starting 6:00 AM, each participating McDonald’s breakfast store will be giving away free McMuffins to the first 1,000 customers at a first-come-first-serve basis –that’s over 315,000 hot and fresh McMuffins to be given away nationwide via Dine-In, Take-Out, and Drive-Thru.

77th #Cebu City Charter Day!

Cebu City will be celebrating its 77th Cebu City Charter Day on February 24, 2014. Several activities have been lined up for the week and among which is the 77th Charter Day Run which will take place on Sunday, February 23, 2014. Assembly time is at 4:00 in the morning.

 Gun Start was at 5AM. Start and finish line will be the road between Honda Cars and Conching Eatery along A. Soriano Avenue at the North Reclamation Area. This will be a 10K, 5K and 3K run. Registration fee is at P200.00 for the 10K and 5K while 3K is for free.

 The proceeds will be donated to the CCMC for the PISO MO, Hospital KO. 

We have added age categories for Masters A (40-45 y.o), Masters B (46-50 y.o.), Masters C (51-59 y.o.) and Masters D (60-above).Singlets will be given to the 1st 150 finishers of 10K and another for the 5K. The special screening of Girl Rising was held last February 7, at the Cebu Normal University and since you most likely missed it you may host your own screening at home with your family, your university as part of Social and Economic Studies or in your office as part of your HR gender sensitivity program.

Feminism and gender equality has been a positive catalyst to our modern society creating a world a better place for women, members of the third sex and the marginalized. The private sector champions are: Avon, Actavis, Banca Intesa, B92 Media, Carlsberg, Coca Cola Hellenic Group Serbia, Deloitte, Erste Bank, IBM, Serbia Post, Transnafta and VIP Mobile. Many had already begun to implement a range of initiatives to empower women, such as to develop and track the leadership potentials of female employees, HR practices that protect women's interests, sponsoring women and LGBT events, offering flexible work schedules and recognizing the status of working parents.

As a business leader, you should start to take the cue of those who signed up for this treaty and in your own small ways, join in the revolution to make the private sector one of the best places to work and live for.
