Together we have planted more than 200,000 seedlings of native tree species, fruit tree seedlings, and mangrove trees. With the sustainability plans of RAFI and its partners, we are seeing a beautiful thriving forestry in the future.
The event broke its own records exceeding a target of seedlings, double than planned. Even the participants multiplied a couple folds from the 4,000 who initially registered.
To celebrate this, RAFI organized a Partners’ Day held at the Casa Gorordo last August 2, 2011. It started with the opening preliminaries and Audio Visual Presentations of the foundation and the Greenin Philippines program.
Ms. Rowena Alensonorin, Executive Director of RAFI, gave the accomplishment report and congratulated San Remigio for planting the most with more than 49,000 in 14 hectares of land.
During the interaction with media, Gov. Gwen Garcia shared that she issued an executive order that advised local government units to carry out the Run2Plant in their respective jurisdictions to express support for the program.
Also in the interaction was Mr. Roberto E. Aboitiz, President of RAFI, Mr. Maximo O. Dichoso, Regional Director of DENR 7, and Dr. Pedro A. Noval, Jr., Regional Director of DILG 7.
The provincial government, private sector, LGUs, national agencies, schools and universities, running clubs and other non-government organizations collaborated to make it successful.
SUSTAINABILITY
Ms. Rowena affirms that RAFI and mountaineering groups went back to the sites to ensure the trees will thrive and grow. LGUs deployed personnel to serve as caretakers of the planting sites as well. A series of activities are even organized to maintain and sustain the project such as Run to Take Care, Adopt-a-Mountain and integration with eGwen Our Cebu Program. There is also a social networking approach of maintenance which is the Tree that Binds to connect ‘tree owners’, discuss and post progress reports. Here is the special video coverage by yours truly, Jaysee Blabs of the RAFI GREENIN Philippines Partners’ Day:
