Lorega, Mambaling, Missionaries of the Poor | Best and Worst Cebu Community Visits | YMA Thematic Session Day 1

The Thematic Sessions were one of the greatest experiences we had. We were exposed to a lot of societies and gained valuable insights along the way and Cebu City communities became our classroom once again as Young Minds Academy teaches us more about community organizing, realities that face our unfortunate brothers and sisters, and amazing projects that alleviate living conditions and mindset along the way.

Our first Thematic Session happened last June 4-5, 2011 and it only proved that no sun too excruciating, no mountain too high, no place too horrid, no barangay too dangerous for the scholars of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) to learn more and immerse as we become the future leaders of the country in our own ways.

Poverty as the UN defines it is a human condition characterized by the sustained or chronic deprivation of the resources, capabilities, choices, security and power necessary for the enjoyment of an adequate standard of living and other civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights.

We started with Ms. Montenegro’s situationer. She is from Department of
Economics at the University of San Carlos where I learned that most of
the impoverished people live in the rural areas because I grew up
thinking that the slums were the worst.
We started with Ms. Montenegro’s situationer. She is from Department of Economics at the University of San Carlos where I learned that most of the impoverished people live in the rural areas because I grew up thinking that the slums were the worst. Our country defines poverty as people who can’t seem to earn Php 974 to meet his or her monthly food needs. She also presented graphs from the UN which tackles about poverty threshold which concludes that people need at least Php 1,403 to stay out of poverty. But what was the most interesting thing she shared was the fact that the world has around 6.1 billion people. The richest which only comprised 20% of the total population has the biggest chunk of the world’s income which is 74%. Locally, Malabuyoc has the highest poverty incidence in Cebu.

Our first visit was the GK site in Lorega and the place holds dear to me
a lot of my buddies reside there. In fact, one of them is actually a
potential recipient of the home since they belong to the cemetery
dwellers association.

What was also interesting to note is the partnership of a private
sector, GK and the city government in providing socialized housing
project for the living while at the same time giving respect for the
departed.

The Bajao community in Mambaling was quite amazing because they mostly
have identical houses and the living condition was quite bad especially
when we heard that the same sea they bathe on is the same sea that they
defecate on to.
The Bajao community in Mambaling was quite amazing because they mostly have identical houses and the living condition was quite bad especially when we heard that the same sea they bathe on is the same sea that they defecate on to. Listening to their community organizers was enriching as to what lengths they have to go through especially in the legislative side of the city tracing way back when. We were also able to see what progress could do as the South Road Properties just overlooks them.

Brgy. Ermita, which houses what is perceived to have the highest crime
rate in terms of the petty ones such as Carbon, now boasts of great
peace and order situation as to how they minimized drug activity and
increased police and barangay tanod patrolling.
Brgy. Ermita, which houses what is perceived to have the highest crime rate in terms of the petty ones such as Carbon, now boasts of great peace and order situation as to how they minimized drug activity and increased police and barangay tanod patrolling. Their barangay official was very detailed in giving us definite facts about the place also in terms of history such as how it was named as Ermita and the faith debate activities that used to happen at the Freedom Park.

But the most heartbreaking one has got to be the Missionaries of the
Poor site where we get to bond with the elderly and special kids. It is
heartbreaking in the sense that they all reminded me of my niece. I
couldn’t imagine how many troubled women there are to resort to such
thing and whatever their reasons will never justify their actions.
But the most heartbreaking one has got to be the Missionaries of the Poor site where we get to bond with the elderly and special kids. It is very unfortunate to see a lot of little kids being abandoned by their mothers and most of them have been left incapacitated by attempted abortion, and what is tear inducing is that they all reminded me of my niece. I couldn’t imagine how many troubled women there are to resort to such thing and whatever their reasons are will never justify their actions.

</p><p>On a lighter note, Jaysee Pingkian got the chance to play with these kids in their grounds which was really fun.</p><p>
